What is an Apostille?

An Apostille is a certificate issued by a government authority—in our state, the Alabama Secretary of State Office—that verifies the authenticity of a document's signatures and seals so it can be legally recognized in countries belonging to the 1961 Hague Convention.

⚠️ Important Note on Vital Records (Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce Certificates):
By law, Alabama notaries cannot notarize or certify photocopies of vital records. To get an apostille on an Alabama birth or death certificate, you must order an original certified copy directly from the Alabama Department of Public Health Center for Health Statistics bearing the signature of the current State Registrar. Once you have that official certified copy, it can go directly to the Secretary of State

The Unique Alabama Rule: What You Need to Know

Unlike other states where a notary just stamps a document and sends it directly to the state capital, Alabama requires a "hybrid" three-step process for notarized records:

  1. Flawless Notarization: We meet you locally in Florence, Muscle Shoals, Russellville, or surrounding towns to execute a legal, wet-ink notarization with our official seal.
  2. County Authentication: The document must then be taken to the Probate Judge's office in the specific county where the notary's commission is registered to certify the notary's active status.
  3. State Apostille: Only after county authentication is complete can the document be submitted to the Secretary of State in Montgomery for the final gold foil sea
